Creative Movement

Fifth grade students explored creative movement in Ms. Dempsey’s theater class this past week. They began by experiencing locomotor (from place to place) and non-locomotor (in place) movement. Next, the students experimented with ways their bodies could soar, flitter, scamper, slither, and float, and also discovered how to pop, bubble, shatter, crumble, ooze, and melt! The students then worked in groups of five to choreograph a short dance incorporating two to three of these movements.

With instructions to include a beginning and ending pose, unison and other movement patterns, students eagerly began sharing and testing out their ideas. Observations and discussions ensued as they worked to revise and refine their dances. Groups proudly performed their finished pieces for their peers. After enthusiastic applause, students shared positive comments about the creative choices of each group.
